Tanzania is a much visited tourist destination in Africa. Many holiday makers now go on holiday to Tanzania and stay in holiday home accommodation. In the last few years it has become possible to rent holiday villas, self catering holiday apartments and game lodges in Tanzania. Taking a vacation in Tanzania and staying in holiday home accommodation is a great way of spending a holiday.

Tanzania is a country with a multi cultural heritage and has more game parks and game reserves than any other wildlife destination in the world. It is a holiday destination with pristine coral reefs and some of the most spectacular scenery in the whole of Africa. It is also the largest country in East Africa and has the highest mountain of the continent, Mount Kilimanjaro.

Tanzania is also home to the enigmatic spice islands of Zanzibar and the world famous Serengeti National Park. It is home to over 120 tribal groups and this diversity of cultures ensures that Tanzania has vibrancy to its culture and traditions that no other country in Africa can offer.

The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s oldest national park and is considered to be the best wild life refuge in the world. The open plains of the national park are home to many different species of large animals and birds. It is also home to the great migration and tourists from around the world come to Tanzania to witness this rare and interesting occurrence.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is another popular tourist attraction in Tanzania. The conservation area comprises of a significant archaeological site of Olduvai Gorge and Ngorongoro Crater. The Crater was once the site of an active volcano and now houses about 30,000 animals including buffalo, rhino and zebra. The lakes in the region attract a wide variety of bird species and many bird watchers come here on vacation.

The Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park is another famous place in Tanzania. The towering solitary peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro dominates the entire landscape of the area. The rainforest on the slope of the mount is home to a large number of different types of wildlife species. This dormant volcano has remarkable snow-capped peaks and glaciers. This highest free standing mountain is Africa’s highest peak.

The Stone town of Zanzibar was built by Arab and Indian merchants in coral stone during the nineteenth century. The stone town is characterized by the dilapidated architecture, mosques, bathhouse, old fort, interior courtyards, markets and the remnants of the Omani Arab and Persian influences of the past. The scent of the spices lingers through the region. The Sultan’s palace and the ruins of the old slave market are popular tourist attractions.

Tanzania has many white beaches and beautiful villages around the Zanzibar region. It is possible to rent holiday villas and self catering holiday apartments in this part of Tanzania. The pristine beaches are filled with dhows and fishermen. Holiday apartments are found in the region for the tourists to relax and unwind amidst the splendid beaches.

The fishing village of Nungwi is famous for boat building and a popular destination for the younger tourists. Many rent holiday apartments in this region of Tanzania and enjoy the local night life. During the day they can try their hand at diving and deep-see fishing. The isolated beach of Matemwe has a fine coral reef and is perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving.

Many holiday makers choose to come to Tanzania and rent holiday home accommodation. While staying in holiday villas and self catering holiday apartments they are able to sample the true flavour of life in Tanzania.

GUIDE ON HOW TO pick and book an african safari

It’s important to put some thought into your safari – the planning is a part of the expedition. Africa offers a diversity of attractions and highlights that must be visited at the right time to ensure an experience of a life-time. When to travel Africa is essential to a great experience! This depends on your specific needs and requirements. Interests range from Africa’s spectacular wildlife to the wide variety of birds that occur in Africa at different times of the year.
When to travel Africa really depends on the type of animals you wish to see or the activity you would like to partake in. Certain reserves have good game viewing all year round but others will have particularly good elephant sightings or other migratory animals at different times of the year.

Generally all the year long is possible to undertake an African safari, though the dry seasons are most likely to guarantee better road conditions in the parks, as the grass is dry and vegetation sparse making game viewing easier. It is also the time when animals are on the move looking for food and water. In Kenya and Tanzania, you have the memorable opportunity of witnessing the magnificent migration of over two million wildebeests and zebra. Temperatures in winter are mild but can become considerably cooler in the evening, so pack multiple layers of clothing to ensure you stay comfortable on afternoon game drives and walks. It goes without saying that the standard safari gear must include a broad brim hat, sunscreen and mosquito repellent.

Research a little and make sure your ground operator is willing to make your safari special. Some are rather sadly only bothered about money and each client is a number only, others offer excellent personalized services. Beware of such companies as your safari experience is more important.

This step by step overview guide encompasses a few important guidelines designed primarily to assist and guide you in your quest for that fantastic safari getaway.
Following is an outline of some important steps for booking and confirming your african safari:

- Where to go?

- Budget

- Safari package search

- Booking the safari

Step 1: Where to go? Destination

If you have never been on an African safari before, you may be at a loss as to where to go. If you have been already, you might want to plan on going somewhere different. Not because you didn’t enjoy where you went, but because there are so many beautiful things to see in Africa.

Africa is one of a few destinations in the world that gives visitors a veritable spectacle of wildlife that co-exists harmoniously with its human neighbours. This has been as a result of continued support and encouraging the communities to know the importance of self sustaining tourism that does not degrade the environment while at the same time reducing conflict between local communities and wildlife.

From snow covered mountains and beautiful waterfalls, to sandy deserts and aquatic reefs, Africa has got it all. Not to mention all the wildlife; Gorilla trekkers, bird watchers and bush adventure enthusiasts will all be equally delighted. If you love beautiful landscapes and communities rich in culture, you’ll find that, too.

There are quite a few safari destinations to choose from; East africa, Central africa & South africa.

East and Central Africa
Many consider eastern Africa and central Africa to be the best destination for African safaris, this region is loaded with many game parks which include a large variety and population of animals, from the wildebeest migration in Kenya (middle of the year) and Tanzania (early in the year) to the gorillas of Uganda.

East Africa’s landscape includes the spectacular and majestic Mount Kilimanjaro and the famous volcanic Ngorongoro Crater, the largest of its type in the world, which is home to thousands of animals such as Zebra, wildebeest, black rhino, prides of lion including the black-maned males, leopard, cheetah, hyena, elephants, warthog, impala, buffalo, hartebeest, eland and other members of the antelope family.

South Africa
Southern Africa also offers a magnificent scenario for a great safari. South Africa offers an outstanding and rewarding game-viewing experience. Tours here are normally conducted in open 4×4 safari vehicles, giving you greater visibility than a mini-van (commonly used in eastern and central African safaris).

Namibia is a good place if you are looking for elephant, rhino, lion and giraffe.

All the large mammals can also be found in Botswana; elephant, buffalo, red lechwe, lion and cheetah are plentiful.

Not forgetting Zimbabwe, this beautiful country offers Victoria Falls, rolling hills, rock art, and game parks that are home to large herds of elephant and buffalo, sable and roan antelope.

Zambia is also a definite favorite African safari destination. Zambia has many well managed camps in wilderness areas known for concentration and diversity of game, bird life and game fishing. These can be found in the national parks of South Luangwa and Kafue National Park.

A great way to wrap up your African safari is to visit the Indian Ocean islands and beaches, which include Mombasa, Malawi, Mozambique, Mauritius, Madagascar, and the Seychelles Islands. These waters hold hundreds of species of fish, making them a haven for anglers. You can also enjoy snorkelling and scuba diving among the colorful fish, gorgeous flora and fauna, countless coral reefs and marine life.

Step 2: Budget

Whether you are interested in a mobile-tented camping safari, an overland safari, or a luxury fly-in safari, your budget is very important since it determines the safari category, luxury or budget. Both categories offer the thrill, excitement and anticipation of searching, seeing animals & bird life in their natural habitat roaming freely through some of the world’s most spectacular scenery. It’s good to disclose YOUR BUDGET PER DAY PER PERSON, excluding international airfare to Africa, as it will make it easier for safari consultants to supply you with an accurate quote and itinerary.

Most safari packages rates start from USD 400 per person for a basic camping 3 day Masai mara package, however for group bookings the cost drops by 10% & 20% depending on the size of the group.

Step 3: Package Of Interest

Planning a tour to Africa can be time consuming and exciting, often requiring several trip proposals to get it “just right”. Therefore, requesting a few suggested itineraries, free of charge, from different companies during the safari planning process is important. This step goes hand in hand with your budget since prices vary depending on destination, accommodation type, safari duration, transport type, season (time of the year) and services included.
Most accommodation is normally based on:

“HB” means Half Board, Hotel rates will be inclusive of Daily Breakfast and Lunch or Dinner

“BB” means Bed and Breakfast the rates quoted on the Website is inclusive of daily Buffet Breakfast.

“FB“means Full Board the rates that will be quoted to you will be inclusive of Daily Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Step 4: Booking the safari

After searching the web and found a suitable package that fits your dreams & budget finally it’s time to book your dream safari.
For those ready to book an African Safari;

If you book your safari from late July through to the end of September then it is necessary to book well in advance. This time of year is madness.

Any other time of year its ok to leave the actual booking of the safari until a few weeks before your departure. If it is low season, March to end of June, then the safaris [accommodation and to a less extent transport] are at bargain basement rates.

Most safari company websites offer many ready-made safaris and itineraries on offer, and if you don’t find what you are looking for, they’ll put it together for you. Contact them on email, or complete the reservation form available from the website directory, then press or click on the “Reservation” Button at the bottom of the page. After you fill out all of the needed information; press the “Submit Reservation” button.
Don’t forget to supply a detailed description of your requirements as it will make it easier for safari consultants to supply you with an accurate quote and itinerary.

When ready to pay for a safari, it’s important to know what’s included and what’s not included in the package price

There are 2 different methods of paying for your safari package, credit card transaction or wire trasfer.

Please note that payments by credit card are subject to required authorization and at times incur processing fee.

You will be rquired to pay a deposit, so that provisional bookings can be made for the arrangements described in your itinerary. In the event that any accommodations or activities are unavailable, you will be advised of the alternatives and make the appropriate amendments to your itinerary. In certain cases supplemental, non-refundable deposits may be required to secure your reservation prior to final payment. This policy generally applies for camps/lodges that are in extremely high demand, for travel during some holiday seasons or, for “exclusive use” reservations. You will be advised of any such requirements as soon as provisional reservations have been made. When all the arrangements are in place, you will receive a pre-departure package, including important information to assist you in preparing for your safari.

Final payment is due 30 – 60 days prior to your scheduled departure.

Important Tips

- Book as early as three months in advance.

- Discuss pertinent health issues with your doctor (in good time) prior to embarking on your African safari.

- For hotel bookings, book through travel agents since, all reservations are made through most travel agents, are lower , as they have negotiated favorable rates.

- When booking request for a detailed safari itinerary.

- Only use reputable tours and safari companies.

If you take a Kenya Safari Holiday then you will probably visit the Masai Mara Reserve, and if you do, then you should choose Keekorok Lodge as your accommodation..

Keekorok Lodge is situated very close to the border with Tanzania, and is in the perfect place to witness the beginning of the Great Migration in late June/July, when the Wildebeest and Zebra begin their great trek.

One of the reasons that Keekorok Lodge is a great place to be is because it is one of the oldest Kenya Safari Holiday Lodges, and so it is positioned in just the right place in the direct path of the migration.

When the great migration is at its peak sometime from August to November, it is completely surrounded by animals, a truly amazing experience.

Keekorok has large and beautiful grounds, and it has been renovated recently, with 100 rooms in bungalows, single story blocks, and comfortable chalets with large private verandas.

They are all well furnished and tastefully decorated with only the best materials. The ensuite bathrooms look out over the plains and distant hills.

Keekorok has a good swimming pool, which is a great place to relax between game drives, a restaurant and a bar, with a viewing deck over the hippo pool, which is full of hippos, and extensive walkways allowing great viewing from the lodge straight onto the game in the park.

The best and quickest way to get to Keekorok is by light aircraft, which comes in from Nairobi and Mombasa .

Food in the restaurant is of good quality, and is buffet style, with lovely cakes and fresh fruit flown in daily from Nairobi. You can sit outside on the terrace at the adjacent bar, well protected by the Masai who will also entertain you. A Kenya Safari Holiday without seeing the Masai dance is an definitely incomplete. You could need the Masai guards when you are sitting outside because Keekorok Lodge has no fences which can at times make like quite interesting, but is definitely a plus point. You might for example hear lion chasing zebra outside your room at night!!

You will see on the game drives in the Masai Mara lions and cheetahs, hyenas, and the defenseless game they follow, but the real joy of Keekorok is the wildebeest and hyena during the migration. Whatever you do, arrange a balloon trip with the champagne breakfast floating over the mass of wildebeest, which is a truly unforgettable experience.

Apart from the balloon trip, it is a good idea to organize your game drives through Keekorok, so you can be sure of being by yourself and family, and not in a minibus which many of the Kenya Safari Tour package holidays organized from home seem to be based around.

To summarize, Keekorok is a great and modern Lodge in the middle of the Masai Mara, and as such a necessary stop on any Kenya Safari Tour. It is large and busy in comparison with other lodges, but if that is what you want as part of your Kenya Holiday then you will like it very much indeed. It is well run, comfortable with excellent service

We’ve all heard of safari holidays, you go to Africa, pile into a jeep and get to see some amazing wild animals on a nature reserve. Unfortunately with poaching and extinction threatening these majestic creatures these nature reserves are the few places that you can get to see and get close nowadays.

But Safaris are no longer simply associated with the usual desert and pith helmet connotations they used to, many holiday companies are marketing other experiences as safaris in their own right.

In Uganda there is a mountain safari that is centred around following the tremendous mountain Gorillas, these intimidating animals live on the sides of the mountains in Bwindi. There are two family groups that live on the mountain and through many years of slowly acclimatising them to human intrusion they now tolerate the presence of small tour groups for times of normally one hour in length.

Of course these animals are extremely powerful and unpredictable but each tour group is accompanied by experienced guides who have studied the gorilla’s behaviour down to their body language and sounds. In the event that the gorillas are not happy with the visit then the guides will know about it and visitors will be able to come back at another time.

One other safari location which you wouldn’t expect would be Norway. Yes, Norway is home to another kind of safari, an underwater one. There are holidays available to go snorkelling with Orcas, although the cold waters are not to everyone’s taste and so if it’s not your bag then you can observe from the trawler or large dinghy you use to get out to the orcas habitat. But don’t worry if you don’t want to get out of the boat as it isn’t uncommon for Orcas to become curious of the vessel and swim up close to get a closer look.

The locations that these tours cover are feeding grounds for families of Orcas; they scare smaller fish to the surface and pelt the water’s surface in order to stun them. This has been described as a breath taking visual and many people regard it as one of the best holidays they have experienced. And with cheap holidays to mainland Europe becoming more prevalent now is a good time to go.

These are just two alternative safaris which let you get up close to animals that you are less likely to see these days, even in some zoos. The term “Safari” may mean an overland expedition but these days with this kind of holiday on offer the term’s definition has been broadened to cover all sorts of holidays like this.

The pricing for this type of holiday range from roughly £800 – £1500 per person, but obviously offer once in a life time experiences that you’ll always remember.

Author: Patrick Omari

Africa is an area of outstanding natural beauty. And it is also uniquely different. For first time visitors, the difference can be shocking after leaving your cherished confort zone.

It is important to be prepared for your trip long before you set off. Long trips are hard to plan and it is impossible not to forget something important in your plans however meticulous you are. The only thing you can do is to hope that whatever you forget is not too serious. This human nature should not stop you from making sure everything has been worked out.

Here are some Travel tips and advice for the everyday Safari traveller. Take a look and add this to the often tired holiday-check-list that you might have already. Here are a few truths; Africa is mostly warm, but nights can be very cold. There are few places with seasonal sub-zero degrees especially mountain tops. Public transport is not reliable in terms of time keeping. Many of them run on unscheduled trips. Those that do are premium services, but still ridiculously cheap. Traffic rule enforcement can be lax. Drive as if you are the only sane person on the road.

It is not true that people are savages who don’t value human life-just because you see those violent clashes on TV. The continent has its own share of thugs and zealots. It is not true that those poor women selling handicraft through the windows of the safari vans are vagabonds, that is the propaganda from the van drivers who are paid commission by directing you to more established safari dealers. You will be doing them a great favour to buy from them rather than buy from the rich kiosk owners strategically placed in convenient locations.

Here are a few things to remember. Always keep mobile phones and valuables like jewelry out of sight. They tend to attract the wrong kinds of people. Some street criminals snatch these items for sale. Travel light and keep your luggage close at hand at all times and in sight if possible. Make sure you have contact numbers for the people involved in your safari trip: your family, your safari hotel, your tour agent, the foreign office and the local police. On buses and trains, try sitting near other people in a busy carriage. Don’t walk in alleys alone. Actually keep within the Central Business District of all major cities such as Nairobi and Kenya. Rural villages and towns are very safe because everybody is known to each other. If you lose something, the local leaders will apprehend the culprit.

Telephones are expensive and rare. It might help for you to carry your mobile phone. But I advise you to buy a local Pay As You Go phone the moment you land. It is cheaper to use the local phone than getting charged 10 times more by using your phone abroad. Once you buy, text your friends and family and tell them you have a new phone. Make sure the phone is charged at the hotel before you go and buy an extra top up voucher. In most countries, Pay As You Go are very cheap. You can get one of these cheap models for as little as 40 dollars, line and air time included. Texts from East Africa to UK cost about 20 pence per text. But it is about 80 pence if you use a UK connected phone.

There are other news sources that you can read before you depart for your destination. The starting point is to visit the Government’s Foreign office to see if there is any travel advisories. Sometimes the advisories can be too general and not reflect the true picture on the ground. For example, whereas tour operators might be going about their business even when there is a political issue like the recent political fighting, the Foreign Office hoped to lift the advisory only after the whole scenario has been sorted in the street and in parliament. A shrewd traveller could have easily picked this time to travel because beds were empty at great discounts – almost free in fact.

Understandably so, the Government is slow to approve such situations because they fear backlash if something happened. There are many sites detailing the current news, current events, exchange rate, language, history, customs, types of food, art and festivals of the world’s countries, at least one of which will have something for you. Besides, The Web can help you find the best deals on safari flights, accommodation or complete package safari holidays. Instead of spending time searching for a holiday, users can use the web to get the perfect holiday deal sent to them.

Most banks and travel agents now offer currency services and you can expect to pay around one or two percent of the total amount in commission. When thinking about a destination, think about whether you want hot or cold weather, something relaxed or active. Check that your credit card or travellers checks are accepted by the banks at your destination. Banks are only in major towns. There are accredited Foreign exchange Bureaus in countries such as Kenya and they do give better rates than hotels and Banks. But be careful, conmen and street money changes are many.

If you are web savvy, keep a diary or a safari blog of your holiday travels. Keep the family informed where you are. Keep a copy of the signed and valid passport, and a visa and copies of the itinerary, if required, with a family friend. Give them emergency numbers too.

Lastly, always check your overseas medical insurance coverage and ensure it is adequate. If you have money, there are world-class medical facilities available including the flying doctor. I am not proud of this but I must say that, contrary to myths, these facilities do exist although poor locals can not afford them.

One can choose to fly over, drive through or simply walk though the forest areas during their African safari tour.

Get the shots of all the important vaccinations before leaving for the safari.

Carry the important medicines, food and water in sufficient quantities.

Survey the internet, about the different African safari packages offered by the different tour and travel agents, and then finalize one according to your interest and budget.
